How to Indent a Paragraph in Word?
Four indentation options are available in Word. Follow these steps to indent a paragraph in Word:
Method 1: Using the Tab Key (First-Line Indent)
- Open your Word document
Launch Microsoft Word and open the document you want to edit. - Place the cursor
Click at the beginning of the paragraph you want to indent. - Press the Tab key
Press the Tab key on your keyboard.
The first line of the paragraph will move slightly (5 spaces) to the right.
Method 2: Using the Ruler:
- Enable the ruler (if not visible)
Go to the View tab and check the Ruler box. - Select the paragraph
Click anywhere inside the paragraph you want to indent. - Adjust the indent markers
- Drag the top triangle to create a first-line indent.
- Drag the bottom triangle to create a hanging indent.
- Drag the Rectangle below the triangles to move the entire paragraph
Method 3: Using Paragraph Settings:
- Select the paragraph
Highlight the paragraph you want to indent. - Go to the Home tab
Click Home, then open the Paragraph dialog box by clicking the small arrow in the bottom-right corner. - Set indentation values
Under the Indentation section:- Choose First line or Hanging from the Special dropdown
- Set the measurement in the By box
- Click OK
The selected indentation will be applied to the paragraph.
